Paula Scher — Type is Image
Paula Scher has been a pioneering force in graphic design for over five decades. She began her career as an art director in the 1970s, and by the early 1980s her eclectic approach to typography had become highly influential. In 1991 she became a partner in the New York office of the well-known design firm Pentagram, where she designs logos, signage, packaging and publications. On view until 21 September, the exhibition Paula Scher — Type is Image at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich honours the oeuvre of an American designer who is considered to be one of the most influential graphic designers of her generation.

The work of Paula Scher always revolves around typography. She develops symbols & letters that are simultaneously images. Even before they have been read, they convey their messages through form, size, alignment and colour. Her repertoire of typographic shapes seems truly inexhaustible and thrives on her lifelong passion for collecting — especially historical & marginal fonts. Type is Image presents her work in all its diversity. On display are outstanding commissioned pieces, such as the corporate identity she devised for New York’s Public Theater. These are showcased alongside non-commissioned works in which Scher often reveals herself to be an attentive & humorous observer & commentator of her time.
